Turkmenistan issues commemorative series

The Central Bank of Turkmenistan has issued a commemorative series of banknotes, commemorating 25 years of neutrality. They used the existing series for this issue but with an added logo consisting of two flags, a dove, a globe and the phrase "Turkmenistan: A Land of Neutrality."

That's one of the nice things about collecting banknotes: you learn something new every day. Who would've thought that Turkmenistan was like some sort of Switzerland? (Spoiler alert: it's not)

Syria issues 5,000-pounds banknote

The Central Bank of Syria has issued a new 5,000-pound banknote which looks like ... the thing below. Every year the Banknote of the Year is chosen but I'm willing to bet this one won't be a winner.

Did someone leave a sketch on a copying machine? Which was almost without ink?

Harriet Tubman returns for the 20-dollar banknote

Harriet Tubman, ca. 1885Remember the announcement by President Obama that anti-slavery activist Harriet Tubman would be the next face on the 20-dollar banknote replacing President Andrew Jackson? Well, that nice idea was shelved by his successor President T***p because... well, racism of course.

But since we now have a sane person in the White House again, Harriet Tubman is back on the table! White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki told reporters the Treasury was "exploring ways to speed up" the process. The move would make Harriet Tubman the first African American to appear on a US banknote, and the first woman for more than 100 years. I think that's great news!

(And now, angry mails from MAGA-idiots in 3-2-1...)

The Philippines issue commemorative 5000-piso note

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas has issued a new 5,000-piso commemorative banknote.

On the front, the banknote depicts a young Lapulapu, an image of the Battle of Mactan, the QCP logo, and the Karaoka, the large outrigger warships used by native Filipinos.

The back of the note shows the Philippine eagle, or the Manaol, which symbolizes clear vision, freedom, and strength; and which embodies the ancient Visayan belief that all living creatures originated from an eagle.

Also featured are the tree of a coconut, which was food the people of Samar provided to Ferdinand Magellan and his crew; and Mount Apo, which is located in Mindanao, where the circumnavigators finally found directional clues to their intended destination of Maluku or the Spice Island.

Oman issues new series

The Central Bank of Oman has issued a new series of banknotes on 12 January 2021. This was necessary because the old ruler Sultan Qaboes bin Said Al Said has died and his cousin Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said has succeeded him.

I think the new series looks beautiful. If I were to design a new series for an Arabic country, it probably would look a lot like this in regards to the colors, the themes and the images.
